How to Set Up Shopify Expiring Discount Codes within Klaviyo

Hey, guys! Welcome back to my channel. Today we’re going to be covering how to set up Shopify expiring discount codes within Klaviyo. These expiring discounts are really useful for your automations and flows, especially for your abandoned cart flow. In this blog post, I’m going to walk you through the exact process step by step so you can do it too.

Before we dive in, let me introduce myself. My name is Emily, and I help small business owners and e-commerce brand owners elevate their business using email marketing. If you’re new here, be sure to subscribe because I release new videos every week. Now, let’s get started!

First, we need to access our Klaviyo dashboard. Once you’re in the dashboard, navigate to the left-hand column and click on the ‘Content’ tab, then select ‘Coupons’. This will take you to the coupons page.

On the coupons page, you’ll find a button labeled ‘Create Shopify Coupon’ in the top right corner. Click on it to create a new coupon. We want to create an expiring Shopify coupon that we can add to our abandoned cart flow.

Let’s give our coupon a name. I’m going to call it “Abandoned Cart”. It’s important to choose an easy-to-remember name because we’ll need to include it in the automation later. Adding a prefix can also make the coupon code look tidier. For example, I’ll use the prefix “skin” for a beauty skincare brand.

Next, we need to decide on the type of discount we want to offer. You can choose between fixed amounts, percentages, or free shipping. Consider what your competitors are doing and what works for your brand. In this example, I’ll go with a 10% off discount that applies to the entire order with no minimum purchase requirement. However, if your margins are smaller, you may want to set a minimum purchase requirement or offer free shipping.

Now, it’s time to set the expiration date for the coupon. I recommend setting it to expire after five days to create a sense of urgency and motivate customers to return to their carts. Once all the details are filled in, click on ‘Create Coupon’ at the top right corner.

Great! Now we have our abandoned cart coupon. But how do we add it to our abandoned cart flow? Let’s go back to the specific flow and make the necessary modifications.

In the abandoned cart flow, you’ll see a trigger that starts when someone adds an item to their cart. At this point, you may notice that there are zero available coupons. However, this isn’t something to worry about. Klaviyo will automatically generate coupons when they are added to the cart again since starting the flow.

To include the coupon in the flow, add a flow filter for customers who have not started checkout, placed an order, or been included in other automations or flows. This filter ensures that only those who have abandoned their carts will receive the discount incentive.

Now let’s customize the emails in the flow. In this example, the flow consists of several reminder emails and a discount email. The first email is sent 4 hours after the customer adds an item to their cart, reminding them to complete their purchase. If they still haven’t made a purchase, they receive another email a day later with some social proof and a call to return to their cart. If they continue to delay their purchase, they receive an email offering the 10% off discount we just created. Finally, if they still haven’t made a purchase the following day, they receive one last reminder about the expiring discount.

To add the coupon code to the email, click on the email in the flow and select ‘Edit’. Customize the email content according to your brand, but make sure to include the specific coupon tag. In this example, I’ve included the tag {% coupon_code 'NAME_OF_YOUR_COUPON' %} in a text block and styled it to stand out. This tag will automatically be replaced with the unique coupon code when the email is sent.

Remember to use the exact same name for the coupon in the email as the one you created earlier. This ensures that Klaviyo assigns the correct coupon to the customer receiving the email.

Once you’ve made all the necessary changes, click on ‘Save’, and your email is ready to go!

That’s it! You’ve successfully set up expiring discount codes within Klaviyo for your Shopify store. Now, whenever a customer abandons their cart, they will receive a reminder email with a unique coupon code that expires after five days. This helps create a sense of urgency and encourages customers to complete their purchase.
