What is a Marketing Funnel?

A marketing funnel is a framework that shows how customers progress from being aware of your brand to making a purchase decision and eventually becoming loyal advocates.

It provides a clear visualization of the customer’s journey and helps businesses understand how to guide customers along that path.

Although this can feel quite theoretical, I want to show you how you can use this concept and bring it to life with email marketing!

The Four Stages of the Marketing Funnel

Discovery/ Awareness Stage:

At the top of the funnel, people become aware of your brand. This could happen through social media, word of mouth, or paid advertising. The key here is to grab people’s attention and make a good first impression. The goal is not to sell immediately but rather to present yourself as a compelling and trustworthy brand.

Interest Stage:

In the interest phase, people’s curiosity has been piqued, and they want to learn more about your brand. So this is the time to provide killer content through blog posts, videos, webinars, etc., that deliver value and answer any questions they may have.

Email marketing plays a crucial role in this phase by structuring your marketing efforts, specific campaigns, and automations to guide people along the journey.

Consideration Stage:

Once people have moved through the interest phase, they enter the consideration phase, where they start seriously considering purchasing your product or service.

This is an opportunity to establish trust through reviews, case studies, and a well-crafted welcome email flow. So building brand awareness and identity is vital at this stage.

Decision Stage:

The decision stage is when people are ready to buy. To seal the deal, you need to present them with a clear call to action, such as a limited-time offer or showcasing your best-selling products.

For e-commerce brands, this could include presenting upsells or offering discounts to create a sense of urgency and help them make a decision… As well as adding clear social proof to help build trust around that final purchase decision.

Advocacy Stage:

After making a purchase, customers enter the advocacy phase. This is where you want to turn them into loyal advocates for your brand. Therefore, by providing exceptional customer service and follow-up emails, you can nurture their loyalty and encourage word-of-mouth marketing.

Personalization and engagement strategies, such as newsletters, loyalty programs, and referral programs, play a significant role in building long-term relationships.

Email marketing is a powerful tool for moving customers through each stage of the marketing funnel. So it allows you to personalize your messaging and engage with customers on a more intimate level.
